Exhale to a count of four, holding your lungs empty for a four-count, inhaling at the same pace, and holding air in your lungs for a count of four before exhaling.

Repeat 4 times.

In this episode I speak to clinical psychologist Dr Harriet Mellotte about CBT. Therapy changed my life and I wanted to bring Harriet on to better understand CBT and what it takes to become a clinical psychologist.

CBT changed my life and I hope by introducing more people to the concept and practice that it might inspire more people to investigate if it could help them with something they are struggling with in life.

  • Why Dr Harriet wanted to become a therapist

  • What is CBT

  • Why is CBT effective

  • What are some common exercises that are undertaken in CBT

  • What is trauma and why is so important to address

  • PTSD and how to show up for a loved one processing a traumatic event

  • What are some common themes for men that Harriet’s noticed in practice and through research into veterans

  • The stigma & shame that men have around therapy

  • The importance of not suffering in silence

Hope you enjoy!

âť“Self-reflection question âť“

What prevents me from being in the moment more than anything else?

.

How to answer self-reflection questions…

  1. Set aside time to sit and think.

  2. Remove all distractions or take yourself off somewhere quiet.

  3. Start with the questions that jump out to you the most.

  4. Allow your answers to just flow – write whatever comes to mind.

  5. Be honest. There’s no point asking yourself self-reflection questions if you’re not going to be honest with your answers.

  6. Don’t be afraid of what you might discover. Give yourself permission to be honest, raw and real.

  7. If it helps, try meditating on your self-reflection questions. Sit somewhere quiet. Clear your mind and with the questions in front of you, just ponder on them with no pressure or judgement. Afterwards, write down what you can remember.
